Wine Style: Medium Bodied Red
Closure: Cork / Cork Type
Producer: Domaine du Pegau
The domaine’s origins date back to the 17th century, but it was reborn in 1987, when Laurence Feraud joined the domaine of her father, Paul, renaming it Domaine du Pégau. Laurence presides over 18 hectares of red Châteauneuf in total that comprises several plots of vines up to 80 years old spread across some of the region’s greatest terroirs, including La Crau, Montpertuis, Les Bosquets and Pignan. Winemaking has not changed enormously since the 17th century; the grapes are lightly pressed and whole-bunch-fermented today as they were then. After fermentation the wines are aged in large old barrels for a minimum of 18 months, and bottled without filtration.
A blend of 20 percent Merlot, Syrah, Carignan and Grenache and a blend of vintages, this particular incarnation being from 2011, 2012, 2013 – look at the clock on the neck label and you will see which vintages have gone into that bottling. As an untraditional blend and a mix of vintages this is a vin de table, and hence incredible value. For these are all Pegau grapes, grown in the same way as all of the others and made in their uncompromisingly traditional style. All whole bunch, and ageing predominantly in large old oak foudres with a small proportion in steel – no new oak. Bursting with character, open boisterous flavours of dark cherries, spices and herbs, gripping and hearty with great freshness to balance the full-flavoured fruit. A wine of incredible personality for the price.
